During the Civil War many Sunman area citizens served three years in Co. “G” of the 83rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry and twenty-two did not return. Company “G” fought at Arkansas Post, Vicksburg, Jackson, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Atlanta, Bentonville, Columbia, and Sherman’s march to Savanah.
