IN MEMORY OF THE GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC BY THE DAUGHTERS OF UNION VETERANS OF THE CIVIL WAR 1861-1865. THIS FORT WAS THE SITE OF THE ONLY BATTLE DURING THE CIVIL WAR TO TAKE PLACE WITHIN THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DURING THE BATTLE PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN, WHO CAME TO OBSERVE THE FIGHTING, WAS FIRED UPON BY CONFEDERATE SHARPSHOOTERS.
