GENERAL BAKER SERVED AS IOWA’S ADJUTANT GENERAL DURING THE CIVIL WAR. HE HAD A MAJOR ROLE IN RAISING 57 REGIMENTS DURING THE WAR. HE WAS CONSIDERED A FRIEND AND SUPPORTER OF VETERANS AFTER THE WAR. WHEN HE DIED IN 1876, VETERANS RAISED FUNDS FOR THIS IMPRESSIVE MEMORIAL IN WOODLAND CEMETERY.
